Kiyoshi George Fukano attended the University of Washington from 1935 to 1942 (he received his undergraduate degree in Fisheries in 1939). He worked as a fisheries biologist at the Institute for Fisheries Research in the Michigan Department of Natural Resources between 1944 and 1964. From 1965 until 1981, he worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Fisheries Service. He served as editor of the Seattle based Fishery Bulletin.
Kiyoshi George Fukano married Yasuko and had one son. Fukano died on 10 September 2006 in Seattle.
