Grace Chieko Hagiwara was born in Alaska in 1923. She left Ketchikan in 1941 to attend the University of Washington. While in the Puyallup Assembly Center she met her husband, Paul S. Hiyama. Grace Hagiwara Hiyama later attended William Smith College, Lawrence College and Drake College where she received a degree in music education in 1949. She would later go on to get a master's degree from Teachers College of Columbia University.

Grace Hiyama taught in Michigan, opening Montessori kindergartens in her husband's parish. She also taught in the local public school system. Grace and Paul Hiyama had three children: Stephen, Suzanne and Karen. Grace Hagiwara Hiyama died on 27 January 2008 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
