Shizuko Higano had to withdraw from the University of Washington in April 1942, but was allowed two credits for that quarter. She left Minidoka after one year for Denver, Colorado, where she finished her M.A. in Dietetics at Colorado A&M. She worked as a Dietitian in a hospital in Philadelphia and then left to work in Kuakini Hospital in Honolulu. Later, Higano moved to Orange, California where she worked in a hospital and founded the Diabetic Society in Orange County (she also wrote articles about nutrition and diabetes for the Society). After retirement, she taught at Fullerton College and also taught nutrition classes to seniors.

Higano married Bob Miyamoto in 1965.

Shizuko Higano Miyamoto died on 2 August 2000 in Orange County, California.
