Book Awards

Newbery Award

The American Library Association awards the John Newberry Medal annually for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. The award, proposed by Frederic G. Melcher in 1921, honors the 18th century English bookseller, John Newbery.

Caldecott Award

The American Library Association awards the Randolph Caldecott Medal annually to the artist who has created the most distinguished picture book of the year. The award, proposed by Frederic G. Melcher in 1937, is named for the 19th century English illustrator, Randolph J. Caldecott.

Coretta Scott King Award

The Coretta Scott King Award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and honors Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her dedication and work in continuing the struggle for peace and justice. The award is presented annually to the African American author and African American illustrator for outstanding contributions to children's literature.

Pura Belpre Award

The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
